Join Jamii for Joy in the Park, a free outdoor summer event in David Crombie Park filled with live music, dance, art, and neighbours coming together.
On Saturday, July 25, Joy in the Park brings the energy of samba and the power of African and Afro-diasporic dance traditions to The Esplanade. Families, friends, and neighbours of all ages are invited to gather in the park for an evening of rhythm, movement, creativity, and community connection.
The evening begins with Sambaê, an all-women samba band led by Aline Morales. Based in Toronto, Sambaê brings lively percussion, Brazilian music, and a welcoming spirit to their performances. Their music invites people to clap, dance, and feel part of the celebration together.
The evening continues with Lua Shayenne Dance Company, presenting a 30-minute performance experience rooted in African and Afro-diasporic traditions. Through live percussion, song, dance, call-and-response, and guided audience participation, the company invites audiences to experience rhythm as something shared between artists and community. Their work connects music, movement, storytelling, and cultural memory in a way that is joyful, accessible, and deeply felt.
Alongside the performances, visitors can enjoy face painting by Linda Epp, henna by Krishna Patel, crafts for children, and a visit from our stiltwalker Hayley Landry. As part of Jamii’s 15th Anniversary celebrations, we will also share a slice of Jamii’s birthday cake with everyone.
Chairs and blankets will be available, and people are welcome to bring their own. This event is free and open to all.
