JOY IN THE PARK: MARKET ST

JOY IN THE PARK!
July 19, 2025
1 pm to 4 pm
OUTDOOR EVENT SERIES IN DAVID CROMBIE PARK

On Saturday, July 19th, 2025, Jamii hosted a beautiful afternoon on Market Street for Joy in the Market - a vibrant, outdoor celebration in co-partnership with Jamii, St Lawrence Market, and CORPUS. The event drew a crowd of over 600 people who gathered to enjoy live theatre, music, and family-friendly fun - all free and open to the public.

The afternoon featured CORPUS’ acclaimed theatre show Camping Royale and a live concert by Melat Mengesha with her band.

In Camping Royale, two queens from another era embarked on an absurd and delightful camping trip far from their royal court. With only a loyal servant to assist them, they navigated the challenges of outdoor living. This internationally toured production combined dance, humour, and object theatre, delighting audiences of all ages. Between the two performances by CORPUS, audiences enjoyed the soulful and energetic music of Melat Mengesha, an outstanding Ethiopian vocalist now based in Toronto. Her East African rhythms and captivating voice filled the air with joy and rhythm, creating a truly global atmosphere of celebration.

The day was alive with creativity and play. Families brought their little ones to enjoy crafts, face painting with Linda Epp, Henna with Krishna Patel and fun with stilt walker Hayley Landry. Market Street buzzed with colour, laughter, and togetherness as people from across the city came to share in the joy.

Joy in the Market was co-presented by Jamii, St. Lawrence Market, and CORPUS, in partnership with Canadian Stage, and supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, and Rama Gaming House.
