Some weeks call for a calm, friendly room where you can sing without overthinking it. Jamii’s Sing-Along is a relaxed weekly gathering for older adults, held at The Jamii Hub with Stephen Targett on the piano. Together, we revisit much-loved classics, take song suggestions from the group, and enjoy the simple comfort of making music side by side.
Singing together can lift the mood, support breathing and memory, and create a genuine sense of connection. The focus is on participation, not perfection. You can sing along the whole time, join in for a chorus or two, or simply listen and feel the music in the room. Each session follows the energy of the group, making it easy to return week after week.
These workshops are part of Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults program for older adults in downtown Toronto. Participants register for the program, then can drop in to any Thursday session that works for them.
Stephen Targett received a professional degree in classical piano performance from McGill University in Montreal. His work is largely collaborative, accompanying singers and instrumentalists in many genres and styles. He also works as a studio pianist and musical director for cabaret shows, and performs for recitals, auditions, and exams. Alongside performing, Stephen teaches piano, voice, and music theory, does arranging, makes accompaniment tracks, and writes songs. For the past couple of years, he has enjoyed leading Jamii’s Belonging Singing Group at The Jamii Hub in Toronto’s Esplanade neighbourhood.
