About the Event
FREE | ALL AGES* | NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
Guided by principles of empathy, respect, reciprocity, and consent, this beading circle promises to be an enriching experience, engaging in story sharing through the beautiful practice of beadwork. Participants will be invited to make a beaded heart they can take home and will have the basic skills to continue exploring this form on their own time.
Nova Bhattacharya’s beading journey began during the pandemic with a workshop led by Justine Woods, a registered member of the Métis Nation of Ontario, followed by participation in the Lake Nipissing Beading Project with lead artist Carrie Allison and Nipissing University, in collaboration with Nipissing First Nation and Dokis First Nation. Although Nova is a novice, she brings enthusiasm and warmth to the basics of beadwork.
Nova Bhattacharya is an award-winning, barrier-breaking, artist and cultural leader based in Tkaronto. Her inspiration is found in identities, hybridities and diversities, manifesting creations that resonate with technical virtuosity and lush, vivid imagery. In 2008, she founded Nova Dance, embedding the principle that building for the margins ensures inclusion for everyone. Nova’s recent choreography Svāhā! features a cast of 22 performers proficient in more than 29 dance forms currently practiced on Turtle Island. Nova believes that dance expresses the essence of our humanity.
