BOXY SHIRT CONSTRUCTION
Wednesday, June 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 7 PM to 9 PM
Artist: Mayari
This sewing workshop series is part of Jamii’s June Cycle and reflects the 2026 theme, It Feels Right. Guided by Mayari, participants create a boxy-fit shirt across four sessions, building practical garment-making skills while working toward a finished piece they can wear.
The project moves through the full construction process, including pattern adjustments, fabric cutting, assembling the shirt body and sleeves, collar construction, and buttonholes with final finishing details. The relaxed, boxy silhouette keeps the construction approachable while still offering room to refine technique and accuracy.
Each session builds on the last:
Session 1: Measurements, simple fit adjustments, choosing collar and sleeve options, and cutting
Session 2: Constructing the body, sewing and finishing sleeves, and assembling seams
Session 3: Collar shaping, pressing techniques, and collar attachment
Session 4: Buttonholes, buttons, final pressing, and finishing touches
By the end of the fourth session, participants leave with a handmade shirt with clean, professional details.
All materials are provided by Jamii, removing barriers and allowing participants to focus fully on the creative process.
These workshops are designed to support confident beginners and intermediate sewists. Participants are expected to attend all sessions in the month in order to complete the project.
Important registration note: Because this project develops step-by-step across the month, participants are expected to attend all workshop sessions in order to complete their garment.
Workshops are free for participants. Registration is required, and space is limited.
Support free community arts
Jamii keeps workshops free so everyone can take part, without financial barriers. If you’re able, you can support our $15 for 15 Years campaign and help us reach $15,000 by December 15 for Jamii’s future programs at The Jamii Hub. Your donation moves the goal forward and is eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Donate here now.
Jamii’s Cycle Programs are sponsored by Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, TD Ready Commitment, Metcalf Foundation, Rama Gaming House, and Charitable Gaming.
