Spend five Tuesday afternoons learning how watercolour behaves on the page and what you can do with it. This September, artist Yasir Hameed leads Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults community through a hands-on watercolour painting series, starting with foundational techniques and gradually giving participants more confidence to make their own creative choices.

Each session begins with a short demonstration before participants have time to paint, practise, and receive one-on-one guidance from Yasir. Over the five weeks, the group will work with brush handling, colour mixing, washes, layering, and texture. These techniques build on one another, but every session also results in a finished painting, so participants can see their work take shape from week to week.

By the end of the series, participants will have created a small portfolio of watercolour paintings and gained practical skills they can continue using on their own. All materials are provided at The Jamii Hub, so there is nothing to purchase or bring. No previous painting experience is needed.

For older adults interested in watercolour classes, painting workshops, or community visual arts programs in Toronto, the series offers time to learn in a relaxed setting where questions and experimentation are encouraged. There is room to work carefully, try something again, and develop your own relationship with the medium while creating alongside neighbours.

Yasir Hameed is a Toronto-based artist whose background in architecture, urban planning, and environmental studies informs the way he observes and represents places around him. His art often focuses on city life and physical surroundings through expressive composition and colour. Watercolour and soft pastels are central to his current practice, alongside photography and cyanotype printing. That close attention to place, structure, and visual detail comes into his approach as participants learn to see and paint with greater intention.

Belonging participants register for the overall program once and can then drop in to the September visual arts sessions that work for them.
