Three-dimensional collage, sustainable making, and storytelling with Una Janicijevic
This December, collage moves off the page at The Jamii Hub. Led by Esplanade-based artist Una Janicijevic, Collage Lab: Beyond the Page invites Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults community to experiment with collage in three dimensions, using everyday materials to build, layer, arrange, and create in new ways.
Collage is an especially approachable art form because it can begin with materials already around us. Paper, fragments, found objects, images, and other everyday pieces can be rearranged and given new relationships and meanings. In this series, participants will take that familiar idea further by exploring form, structure, and three-dimensional making.
There is no previous art or collage experience needed. Rather than working toward technical perfection, participants can follow ideas as they develop, respond to unexpected combinations, and see what happens when materials are cut, moved, layered, and reimagined. The low-waste nature of collage also encourages participants to think creatively about what can be reused rather than discarded.
For older adults interested in collage workshops, mixed media art, sustainable art practices, or visual arts programs in downtown Toronto, the sessions offer an accessible way to make art alongside others. There is room for conversation, experimentation, and personal storytelling, with each participant approaching the materials from their own experiences and point of view.
Una Janicijevic is an artist, designer, and mother based right here on The Esplanade. Her award-winning multidisciplinary practice spans publishing, media, arts, and education, with storytelling at the centre of her work in collage, illustration, and participatory making. Sustainability and community engagement are also important parts of her practice. Her work has been published and exhibited in Canada and internationally, and she is currently illustrating a forthcoming picture book for Second Story Press. Having a neighbourhood artist lead these sessions adds another layer to the experience, connecting creative practice directly to the community where the workshops take place.
Belonging participants register for the overall program once and can then drop in to the December visual arts sessions that work for them.
Support free community arts
Jamii keeps programs and events free so everyone can take part, without financial barriers. If you're able, you can support our $15 for 15 Years campaign and help us reach $15,000 by December 15 for Jamii's future programs at The Jamii Hub. Your donation moves the goal forward and is eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Donate here now.
Jamii's Belonging Older Adults workshops are sponsored by Government of Canada - New Horizons for Seniors Program, Canada Council for the Arts, Government of Ontario, and St Lawrence Neighbourhood Association.
