PILATES AND YOGA
October 6, 20, 27, 2026 from 10 AM to 11:15 AM
Facilitator: Nickeshia Garrick
This October, Nickeshia Garrick returns to The Jamii Hub to lead three Tuesday mornings of movement with Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults community. Using techniques from Pilates and yoga, Nickeshia’s classes gently strengthen and stretch the body while keeping things lively with upbeat music and the energy of moving together.
The sessions are designed to welcome different levels of mobility. Participants can take part seated in a chair or moving on their feet, with room to adapt movements and work at a comfortable pace. The focus is on engaging the whole body through stretching, strengthening, breath, and movement in a supportive group setting.
For older adults looking for movement classes, accessible fitness programs, or community arts activities in downtown Toronto, these workshops offer a creative approach to staying active. There is no pressure to keep up with anyone else. Participants are encouraged to listen to their bodies, make adjustments when needed, and enjoy the feeling of moving alongside familiar and new faces.
Nickeshia has been part of Jamii’s community for several years as a facilitator and performer, and their return to Belonging brings back a movement practice many participants already know and love. A Dora Mavor Moore Award-winning and multi-nominated artist, Nickeshia has performed in Tkaronto for over 25 years. Their training includes the New York Institution of Dance and Education, National Ballet School of Canada, Toronto Dance Theatre, and Simon Fraser University, where they earned a BFA in Dance. They also teach movement at Toronto Film School.
Belonging participants only need to register for the overall program once. After registering, you can drop in to the Movement Workshops without completing a separate registration for each session. If you already receive Belonging updates by email, you are already registered.
Please note that there is no workshop on Tuesday, October 13.
Support free community arts
Jamii keeps programs and events free so everyone can take part, without financial barriers. If you’re able, you can support our $15 for 15 Years campaign and help us reach $15,000 by December 15 for Jamii’s future programs at The Jamii Hub. Your donation moves the goal forward and is eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Donate here now.
Jamii’s Belonging Older Adults workshops are sponsored by Government of Canada, Canada Council for the Arts, Metcalf Foundation - Booster Fund, St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association, Rama Gaming House, and Charitable Gaming.
