JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2026
AFRO-BRAZILIAN DANCE
Tuesdays, January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10, 17, 24, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM
Facilitator: Newton Moraes
Start your Tuesday morning with music, movement, and a room full of neighbours doing the same. In this high-energy Belonging Older Adults session, participants will move, dance, stretch, and build cardio endurance through Afro-Brazilian dance practices, including Samba and Batuque from southern Brazil. It’s welcoming, upbeat, and rooted in presence, with lots of room to listen to your body and move at your own pace.
Each class begins seated, with breathing and gentle, isolated movements through the head, arms, torso, and pelvis. From there, the group transitions to standing work, learning gestures and movement phrases that wake up different parts of the body. Over the session, participants build toward a short movement sequence or simple choreography, then close with a cool-down and relaxation period to settle, reflect, and leave feeling grounded.
This workshop is a great fit for older adults in Toronto looking for a morning movement class that combines dance, stretching, and light cardio in a supportive community setting. The focus is on embodied movement, coordination, rhythm, and stamina, with options to take breaks, modify, or participate more gently as needed. Participants register for the Belonging Older Adults program, then can drop in to any Tuesday session that works for them.
