JOY IN THE PARK: NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY - JUNE 2025
JOY IN THE PARK!
June 21, 2025
6 pm to 8 pm
OUTDOOR EVENT SERIES IN DAVID CROMBIE PARK
Join us for Jamii’s 7th Annual National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration in David Crombie Park! The evening features Aqua Nibii Waawaaskone with their band, Red Rhythm & Blues. Creator, hand drummer, and lead vocalist Aqua writes songs inspired by their life experience as an Anishinaabe–Métis 2Spirit overcoming intergenerational trauma, homelessness, addictions, mental health, and violence. Accompanied by talented queer violinist Brittany Iwanciwski and gifted singer-songwriter Leah Holtom, this trio weaves the deep resonance of the hand drum, soothing sounds of strings, and unforgettable harmonies into the universal language of love. The poetry of each song is beautifully brought to life through rhythm. Rooted in Indigenous stories of resilience, they are a symbol of reconciliation on our shared lands and create space for healing. In essence, they are soul music made of magic.
Jamii is also honoring its long-term relationship with Pikangikum First Nation by presenting a new photo exhibition by Kurri Quill. This exhibition, “Mong'Kah'Job”, calls on us to see the people of Pikangikum - individuals of all ages navigating their own life journeys - while celebrating their culture and way of being. Kurri’s message is a quiet yet powerful invitation to grow closer, to bridge gaps in understanding, and to honour the dignity of each story captured through his lens. “Mong'Kah'Job” is an invitation to see one another more fully.
In addition to Red Rhythm & Blues’ music and the unveiling of Kurri Quill’s photo exhibition, the event features face painting with Linda Epp, crafts with Sun Raven Arts, and food by Tea & Bannock.
Come for the food, the music, the dancing, and the joy. Celebrate Indigenous voices, artistry, and community with us!
